Community Library

Interior View

Third Year Spring | Boston, MA

The Tremont St. Library emerges from the massings of nearby buildings, deriving key surrounding volumes to generate spaces that address local needs. The design is structured around two key volumes – a “community node” and a “library node” – that are bridged together by a conceptual “third node,” defined by a central experiential staircase and the main entrance. Half-floor offsets create layered relationships between spaces, allowing for selective visibility and privacy across different programs.

The wooden slatted facade responds to solar irradiation values – wider distance where less shading is needed – and degree of privacy inside the building programs. These slats rise above the facade, forming rooftop railings. Above, the green roof and terrace offer alternative public spaces and an alternative vantage experience to the neighbourhood, functioning as multifunctional spaces that extend the public realm and weave the library more deeply into its community.
